Ropes Course

Goal: Teamwork

Introduction -
These activities to will help us determine what skills are needed for an effective team as well as how to use those skills to solve problems at school.

Break the students into groups of 10, each group will work to rotate through 3 seperate activities

Alligator Crossing -
The object is to get the entire group from behind a line on the ground onto each successive platform until they crossed to a span of an imaginary river without touching the ground and while collecting the beach balls along the way. No one may step off the platform at any time and you must get your entire team to the other side of the river. The group must create a strategy, assign roles, work as a team, and assess progress throughout the entire activity.

Human Knot -
1) Have groups stand in a close circle
2) Have each person reach into the center of the circle and grab a hand of a person standing across the circle -- each person must hold hands with 2 different people.
3) Try to untangle so everyone in the group is holding hands regularly in a circle.
4) You cannot let go of one another's hands. When the circle is formed, some people can be facing out and some in.

Blind Walk -
Divide group into pairs with one member of
each pair blindfolded. Seeing partner leads blind partner
on a walk only by verbal directions.

Debrief

As you debrief the team after they complete the activity, point out ways they worked together. Emphasize ways they communicated well. During the activity one or two members probably stepped into leadership roles. Others may have served as the problem solvers. The physical portion of the task may have been the strength of other members. Ask the group if they were surprised by who assumed the various roles.
